Delete your account
Two ways to permanently delete your SplitEase account and personal data — in the app, or by request if you no longer have access.
TL;DR — Profile, chats, and device tokens are deleted immediately. Settled financial records are kept for 7 years to meet Indian tax and accounting law, then purged. Your name is anonymised to "Deleted user" in groups you shared with others so their history stays intact.
1. Who this applies to
2. Delete your account from inside the app
- Open SplitEase and sign in.
- Go to the Profile tab (bottom-right).
- Tap Settings → Account.
- Tap Delete account.
- Review the summary of what will be deleted and retained, then confirm.
Deletion is processed immediately. You will be signed out and your data will be removed or anonymised as described in section 4.
3. Request deletion by email (if you no longer have the app)
Please include the phone number or email address associated with your account so we can locate it. We may ask for a one-time verification (e.g. an OTP to the registered number) before we act on the request.
4. What happens to your data
- Profile information — name, email, phone number, avatar
- Device push tokens and login sessions on all devices
- Chat messages you sent inside groups
- Voice recordings, receipt scans, and any temporary uploads
- Personalisation data (smart suggestions, category preferences)
- Settled transactions and settlement records
- Invoices, tax receipts, and Plus subscription records
We are required to keep these under Indian financial recordkeeping law (Income Tax Act, GST Act, and RBI guidelines for entities handling payment-related data). They are stored in an encrypted, restricted-access archive and are not used for any product feature. Seven years after your account deletion date, the archive record for your account is purged automatically.
- Your display name in shared groups is replaced with "Deleted user"
- Expenses you added remain visible to the group so their balance history stays correct, but are no longer linked to you
- Payment records where another user paid you or you paid them remain as an anonymised counterparty
This is necessary so that other members of shared groups are not left with a broken ledger. Anonymised entries cannot be traced back to you and are not personal data under the DPDP Act.
5. What is not deleted
- Anonymised, aggregated analytics (e.g. total number of active users in a month) — these contain no identifiers.
- Backups older than 30 days may still contain your data until they age out on the standard rolling schedule.
- Communications you sent to our support team over email — kept as normal correspondence unless you specifically ask for those to be deleted too.
